Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA)’s Legal Aid for Survivors of Sexual Assault (LASSA) project was proud to welcome Stacy Malone, Executive Director of the Victim Rights Law Center, and Lisa Levine, Clinical Director of the Houston Area Women’s Center, to San Antonio this week to guide our staff on the intricacies of working with survivors of sexual assault.

In an all-day training for advocates, Malone and Levine reviewed the legal needs of survivors, how their needs differ from victims of domestic violence, how to interview survivors, and safety planning. Part of the day was also spent helping TRLA advocates understand trauma, the effects that it can have on survivors, and how to take care of oneself when doing this type of work day after day.

More than 50 TRLA attorneys, paralegals, and social workers attended the training to gain an understanding of how our increased outreach to survivors of sexual assault influences our everyday work.
